The Timeless Elegance of Flos Viscontea: A Stunning Masterpiece of Lighting Design

Introduction

Lighting has the power to transform any space; it can create a cozy ambiance, highlight architectural features, and set the mood for any occasion. Flos, the renowned Italian lighting design company, has been at the forefront of the lighting industry for over five decades. One of their iconic designs, the Viscontea pendant lamp, captures the essence of sophistication and elegance. In this article, we explore the history and design of this stunning masterpiece.

The History of Flos

Flos was established in 1962 in Merano, Italy, by Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina. The company quickly became known for its innovative lighting designs that straddled the line between art and function. Flos collaborated with many renowned designers, including Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni and Philippe Starck, to create lamps that are now considered iconic.

The Design of Viscontea Lamp

One of the most captivating designs by Flos is the Viscontea pendant lamp. Designed by Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni in 1960, the lamp is an expression of the playful and innovative design that Flos is known for. The lamp’s name is derived from the Visconti family, an Italian noble family known for their patronage of the arts during Renaissance times.

The Viscontea lamp consists of a white cocoon-like resin structure that surrounds the light source. The resin is sprayed onto a metal frame, creating a soft and warm light that is reminiscent of a cocoon. The lamp’s design is based on the traditional Japanese lantern, which inspired the Castiglioni brothers to create a modern interpretation that is both striking and functional.

The Redux Version

In 2019, Flos released Viscontea’s updated design, the Viscontea Redux. The company collaborated with Spanish designer Jaime Hayon to create an updated version of Viscontea, which maintains the lamp’s original form while incorporating modern materials and technology. The Viscontea Redux has a high-impact polycarbonate frame that encloses the LED light source, which provides low-energy consumption and durability. The lamp’s diffuser is available in two finishes: cool grey or warm neutral.
